Hinchingbrooke has many ghost stories attached, and an intricate and colourful history. The nunnery dated back to around 1170, and much of the house and walls to the estate have been built with re-used materials including 13th century stones from the priory.

Henry VIII presented the House to Richard Cromwell at the time of the Dissolution in 1538. This is when Hinchingbrooke House began to take shape as a family residence and the building work commenced with the help of Richards’ son ‘Sir Henry Cromwell’. Sir Henry was given his knighthood in 1564 by Queen Elizabeth I at the house, and she also conducted parliamentary business from a room on the top floor. James I was also a visitor of the house and frequently hunted in the grounds of Hinchingbrooke which is now Hinchingbrooke country park.

The Montagu’s purchased the house in 1867 and resided there until the 1960’s. The Montagu family are more famously known as the Earls’ of Sandwich and was in fact John Montagu who came up with the invention!

The House is now used as a school. It has very much retained all of its charm and historical features, even though a great fire broke through the house in 1830, nearly all of the pictures and furniture were saved. During the fire two coffins and skeletons were uncovered. It is believed to be the resting place of the nuns. They have been left untouched, but are now on show, covered over with glass.

Are you brave enough to spend the night in this amazingly beautiful and creepy building?!
