Ely Haunted Weekend – £150

ely haunted weekend

booknowA intimate haunted weekend in the Historic City of Ely, ghost hunting at three amazing venues over two nights. Ely’s Old Gaol, which now houses Ely Museum is said to be very creepy at night. Recent renovations may have agitated the now restless spirits, and faint cries of the prisoners have been heard from within the walls of the Bishops Gaol. The ‘Slaughtered’ Lamb Hotel where strange lights, footsteps and chairs moving of their own accord, are just some of the unexplained phenomenon to occur. Lastly, Oliver Cromwell’s house, which is so actively haunted, that staff are afraid to walk through the rooms alone, day or night! Will you encounter the lady who walks up and down the staircases shaking her keys, or hear the ghostly sound of children laughing…

Ely Museum at the old Gaol dates back to the 13th century, and although the building has had many different uses over the years, it is best known for being the Bishop’s Gaol from c.1679 until 1836. The building has been renovated, but still has many original features such as the planking on the walls and the prisoners’ graffiti. It was common practice to chain prisoners on their backs to the floor, passing them over several bars of iron, and fastening an Iron collar covered with spikes around their necks, as well as placing a heavy metal bar over their legs. Also it was common at the time to attach horizontal wooden planks to the walls which prevented prisoners escaping through them. Offenders guilty of serious crimes such as murder and treason would have received the death penalty and been held in the condemned room to await their fate. Two of the original cell doors are still in place today.

The Lamb Hotel is located next door to the Museum, and in close proximity to the Cathedral. Historically it goes back to the time of King Richard the Second and started as a Coaching Inn providing 165 guest beds and stabling for 395 horses. It has also been used by Officers of the Cambridgeshire Militia, who came to the hotel for periods of training in 1859. The Hotel has many ghost stories attached and retains a traditional and spooky atmosphere.

Our last port of call is Oliver Cromwell’s House, dating back to the 13th century, most famously known for being Oliver Cromwell’s family residence for a period of ten years between 1636 and 1647. The house has also been used as a rectory and it sits beside St Mary’s Church. It was also a public house, but is now Ely’s tourist information centre and visitor attraction, having been restored to its’ former glory, depicting what life would have been like in the 17th Century.
